Ibn al-Arabi and The Akbari Tradition

To those favorable of his teachings, he is referred to as “the greatest master” (al-shaykh al-akbar), known by the moniker “the reviver of the religion” (muḥyī al-dīn), and is seen to express the deepest realities of Islamic theology and spirituality. To his opponents, he is not “the reviver of religion” but rather “the destroyer of religion” (mumīt al-dīn), advocating esoteric heresies that subvert the very basis of the sharī‘a.
