About the Author

Dr. Shahzad Qaiser received his education in Lahore, at the Government College where he received his BA in 1968 and, two years later, did his MA in Philosophy from the University of the Punjab. He entered the Civil Service of Pakistan where he presently serves as The Special Secreary to the Prime Minister.After two decades of a distinguished career as a civil servant, Shahzad returned to the Academic to earn his PhD from Bahauddin Zakriya University, Multan, in 1994 (winning the Tareen Gold Medal) on his dissertation The Metaphysics of Khawaja Ghulam Farid, a subject which has engaged him for all his mature years.He has published numerous books, among them, Quest for the Eternal, of Intellect and Reason, Metaphysics and Trandition, Dimensions of Khawaja Farid’s Metaphysics. The Metaphysics of Khawaja Ghulam Farid, Iqbal and Khawaja Ghulam Farid on Experiencing God.His has five collections of Light Essays (Inshaiya) in Urdu to his credit. He is an accomplished poet of Punjabi language where he has excelled in the tranditional literary genre of Kafi, publishing five vulumes of Kafis; Asmana Dey Bohe Khol Mein Nayein Sub Tun, Gal Wich Payum Prit Mohar, Talawat-e-Wajud. Ishq Faqr del Sang, and a collection of poems Dooji Akh.His literary and academic achievements have earned him many awards, starting from the prestigious Arnold Gold Medal for his first Class First in MA, Pitras Bokhari Award in English Literature, Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL), (1994), Waris Shah Award in Punjabi Literature, (PAL, 1994), Khawaja Ghulam Farid Gold Medal, Islamia University (1998) and President’s Award for Pride of Performance in Punjabi Literature (1998).

The Metaphysics of Khawaja Ghulam Farid is mainly set forth in his Diwan wherein he uses the poetic mode for expressing his vision of metaphysical truth; the reality of the Absolute and the attachment of all thins to the Absolute. Diwan-i-Farid is one of the most outstanding masterpieces of Punjabi mystical poetry and belongs to the rich and illustrious tradition of wisdom poetry, or contemplative poetry in the Islamic civilization.
